Tufting Workshops with Amanda
Tufting Workshops
A playful, hands-on workshop for colour lovers, texture seekers and anyone who wants to try something new.
Join artist Amanda Vencatasamy for a relaxed and immersive introduction to rug tufting at Sean O’Casey Community Centre in East Wall, Dublin.
This 4.5-hour workshop is a chance to step away from the everyday, slow down, and spend time making something colourful, tactile and completely your own.
You’ll learn how to use a tufting gun, experiment with wool, colour and texture, and create your own small tufted rug or wall hanging to take home on the day.
No previous experience is needed. This is a beginner-friendly, artist-led workshop designed to give you time to settle in, enjoy the process and reconnect with your creativity.
A Creative Break from the Everyday
Tufting is incredibly satisfying once you get going. The rhythm of the tufting gun, the softness of the wool, progressing with colour filling the frame - it’s a lovely way to switch off, focus your hands, and get lost in the process!
This workshop is not about perfection.
It’s about trying something new, playing with colour, enjoying a few hours away from your usual routine, and leaving with a finished piece you’re proud of.
Come on your own, bring a friend, or book as a small group.
What You’ll Make
During the workshop, you’ll create a small tufted piece, approximately 40 x 40cm.
Your finished piece can be used as:
A small rug
A wall hanging
A decorative textile artwork that you can frame yourself
You’ll choose your design in advance so your frame can be prepared before you arrive. Simple, bold designs work best for tufting, and you’ll receive a design library to help you choose.
You can select one of our beginner-friendly designs or send your own simple image.
What to Expect on the Day
The workshop is relaxed, supportive and hands-on from the start.
During the session, you’ll be guided through each stage of the process:
Welcome, safety introduction and demonstration
Practise using the tufting gun
Start tufting the outline your chosen design
Fill in sections of your piece with wool
Back your piece with a rug backing cloth
Learn how to shave, shape and finish the surface ready to take home!
There will be plenty of support throughout, but also space to get into your own rhythm and enjoy the making process.
Tea, coffee and snacks will be available during the workshop. Please bring your own lunch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience?
No. This workshop is designed for complete beginners. You’ll be guided through everything.
What will I make?
You’ll make a small tufted piece, approximately 40 x 40cm, which can be used as a rug or wall hanging.
Can I choose my own design?
Yes. You can choose from the workshop design library or send your own simple image. Designs need to be sent at least one week before the workshop.
What designs work best?
Simple, bold designs work best. Try to avoid tiny details, thin lines, small writing, complicated portraits or lots of tiny colour changes.
Can I choose my colours?
Yes. We’ll use your chosen image as a guide and prepare wool colours for you. You can make small colour changes on the day depending on available wool.
Do I take my piece home on the day?
Yes. You’ll tuft, finish and back your piece during the workshop so you can take it home with you.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little woolly or gluey. Please avoid scarves, dangling jewellery and very loose sleeves. Long hair will need to be tied back.
Can I come on my own?
Absolutely. Lots of people come to creative workshops on their own. The atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and supportive.
Can I book with a friend?
Yes. If you book 2 or more standard places, the price is €95 per person.
